The History of Wool House
In the early 1930s Wool House was founded in Lithuania, a country surrounded by lush forests, freshwater lakes, and rapid rivers, which has long been known for good and skilled craftsmanship. During the interwar period, winters were cold and harsh, and the interest for warm and durable knitwear was valued and in high demand. This resulted in a positive outcome for Wool House and their sales increased rapidly. During this period, the Soviet Union took control of Lithuania, resulting in more than 130,000 people deported to labour camps or forcibly relocated to desolate parts of the Soviet Union. As a result, multifold of Lithuanian companies didn’t feel safe in their own country and many businesses closed down. One of these was the successful family business, Wool House.
In the early 1980s, there was a growing aspiration for democracy and independence in Lithuania, and an environmental movement emerged after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. Wool House was reborn in 1988, only two years before Lithuania declared independence from the Soviet Union.
